this book is amazing! something I enjoyed well-nigh it was the author speaking on the idea that we get caught up in the legality of being a "Christian" and we draw lines where there are clear lines to depict and base of operations our religion on that. i.e. drinking, sex, language. however, nosotros were not called to be religious. and we were non called to exist "Christians". we were called to be disciples. and the greatest commandment is to love God and love others. there is no clear line in that, and then we must go to the this volume is astonishing! something I enjoyed almost information technology was the author speaking on the thought that we get defenseless upwardly in the legality of being a "Christian" and we draw lines where there are clear lines to draw and base our organized religion on that. i.e. drinking, sex, language. withal, we were non called to be religious. and we were not chosen to be "Christians". we were called to be disciples. and the greatest commandment is to love God and love others. in that location is no clear line in that, and so nosotros must go to the vine for that. And so Ortberg shows how wide-ranging his view of the Gospel is as he lists problems: "You proper noun the problem--greed, fear, racism, injustice, divorce, sexual assail, fail, pollution, suffering, habit, rejection, bitterness, violence, apathy, grief, war, death."

The volume is divided into two parts. Part ane asks the reader to rethink conservancy and consider that it is much more than than the minimum requirement to enter heaven. This walk includes seeing God everywhere, leaving baggage behind, adopting a new mental map, and condign enlightened of union with Christ.

This is a well-researched, Scripture-filled book that would serve as a great modest-group Bible study. Ortberg refers to C.Southward. Lewis, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Rankin Wilbourne, Dallas Willard, and others throughout the book.

He includes personal stories, historical stories, and Bible stories at just the right moment to keep the reader engaged.

In addition to this valuable resource for Christians, Ortberg adult a five-session study with a DVD to back-trail the participant's guide. I did not receive the DVD or participant's guide.

Ortberg's book, "Eternity Is Now In Session" is an attempt to correct the watered down Christian conventionalities that you're saved and then you become to sky - and that's that. I have to say I always capeesh it when someone attempts to correct a watered downwardly version of Christianity and explain a more biblical view of it. For this reason, I'd say, Yes, I liked parts of Ortberg's book. I'k glad he talked about discipleship, following Jesus, beingness united to him, living by grace, and enjoying a foretaste o Ortberg's book, "Eternity Is Now In Session" is an attempt to correct the watered down Christian belief that y'all're saved and then you go to sky - and that's that. I have to say I always appreciate it when someone attempts to correct a watered downward version of Christianity and explicate a more biblical view of information technology. For this reason, I'd say, Yeah, I liked parts of Ortberg's book. I'thou glad he talked nigh discipleship, post-obit Jesus, being united to him, living by grace, and enjoying a foretaste of heaven now. Some parts of the book were helpful.

All the same, I'd also have to say, No, I didn't like everything nigh the book. Start, it seems similar he made several false dichotomies. For case, he seemed to ready doctrinal belief against obedience, equally if the ii are at odds (p. 68). Similarly, on page 133 he sets conventionalities against following Jesus by suggesting that Jesus didn't say, "believe the right things near me..." only "follow me." Yet, quite obviously in the New Testament, it is essential that disciples believe the right things near Jesus (eastward.thousand. John 20:31).

Some other weakness of this volume is the fact that at that place are some questionable phrases: "Jesus' main trouble on world is going to exist the church" (p. 142). Really - his helpmate? "To take saving organized religion is to believe what Jesus himself believed..." (p. 137). That'south not how Scripture defines faith! "His [Jesus'] one command was to pursue the Kingdom" (p. xix). What almost his command to love? Anyway, perhaps Ortberg is using hyperbole or this is merely his writing way, but I plant it quite annoying and unhelpful.

Anyhow, this isn't the best book on eternity. In fact, I'd pass it upwards and look for ane that doesn't accept false dichotomies and uses more clear biblical language.

John Ortberg has a way of expressing deep thoughts and complex ideas in everyday linguistic communication. That has been true in previous books of his and continues to exist true here.

In a lot of means, this book feels like a companion book for it a prequel to God Is Closer Than You Recollect. He carries the idea of God's Kingdom existence a reality on this fallen Earth today in a different light. He works to delicately slice the difference betwixt earning conservancy by what we do and how our beliefs changes when God is present in our hearts. He walks through the metamorphosis that happens in our lives, knowing we, like Peter, may have to cover some basis a couple of times.

My criteria for five stars include challenging me to think and run across in new ways. What an inspiring and encouraging book! John Ortberg has done a phenomenal job of explaining only what eternity is, and when information technology begins. So when do you think eternity begins? When you dice? Surprisingly that is the view many have of eternity. Information technology seems to be something and so very far away, something to be hoped for and attained, withal if we read the scriptures, we find that eternity begins the very moment nosotros believe in Christ for salvation. In one case nosotros grasp that realization, we become more than motivated to "lay What an inspiring and encouraging volume! John Ortberg has done a phenomenal job of explaining just what eternity is, and when it begins. So when do you think eternity begins? When you die? Surprisingly that is the view many have of eternity. It seems to exist something and then very far away, something to be hoped for and attained, yet if nosotros read the scriptures, we discover that eternity begins the very moment we believe in Christ for salvation. Once we grasp that realization, we become more motivated to "lay up treasures" in heaven. Nosotros may besides find ourselves looking for a deeper relationship with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He IS, afterall, the very reason we're offered eternity with Him. This book brings to light the realization that we should be striving toward eternity, as something we already have, still want to add together to. The previous volume I read: Soul Keeping, was great. I remember I am spoiled by it. I assumed Eternity is Now In Session would be similar it. I'm a trivial disappointed. It'due south probably just as good. Information technology could (theoretically, be better, but I don't recall it was. I'm probably being entirely unfair to Mr. Ortberg.
My lack of enthusiasm isn't his fault. I highlighted some actually good passages that I should go back through and journal nearly.
Years agone, I discovered that God gives us three different kinds of gi The previous book I read: Soul Keeping, was peachy. I think I am spoiled by it. I assumed Eternity is Now In Session would be like it. I'm a little disappointed. It's probably just as adept. It could (theoretically, exist meliorate, just I don't remember it was. I'thousand probably being entirely unfair to Mr. Ortberg.

My first experience with Ortberg'south writing was refreshing and life-giving. In his volume, Eternity is Now in Session, Ortberg makes a example for seeing Salvation in Christ not as the "minimum requirements" to getting into heaven, just more than of "getting sky into you." Ortberg shows us that being a Christian isn't "getting into the club," but becoming more and more similar Jesus in our daily lives.

This was a smashing book with groovy insights. I love Ortberg's style of writing. You can hear his feel as a pastor and a doctor of clinical psychology in his writing. It's a beautiful weaving of a holistic mode to communicating.

Fantastic book. Really got me thinking more than near living out my eternity right now as a disciple of Christ. Loved so many of the letters in the book.
