Timothy Harrison is a believer. The 18-year-old has been working at the Waffle House in Center Point, Alabama for just over a month as he finished up his senior year at Woodlawn High School in Birmingham, but the young man who has seen tough times believes in good."I had people want to see me succeed, so it kind made me excited," Harrison said. On the day of his high school graduation, Harrison found himself without a ride to the commencement across town at the Birmingham Crossplex, so he decided he would head to work and miss the ceremony. When he showed up at the restaurant on graduation day, he caught his manager and co-workers by surprise. "That's when I said, 'Why aren't you going to graduation?' And he said, 'I don't want to miss work," manager Cedric Hampton recalled. "So, I was like, 'You're going!' "I was like, 'I thought you were supposed to graduate today but I ain't got my stuff,' said Harrison's co-worker Shantana Blevins. "And I'm like, 'What do we need to do?'" Hampton and Blevins, who refused to let Harrison miss such a momentous occasion, jumped into action. They hurried to buy him some nice dress clothes to wear to graduation, including a shirt, slacks and a tie. "When I put on the clothes, I don't even know the words. It was the best feeling," Harrison said. After getting dressed inside the Waffle House, Harrison hopped into Blevins' car and she drove him 20 miles to the Crossplex just in time for graduation. "To see his face when he came out, that was priceless," Blevins recalled after seeing the 18-year-old in his cap and gown with his diploma in hand. The heartwarming story of the Waffle House team's generous act of kindness hit social media and it quickly took off. Lawson State Community College even took notice and decided to do something special for the hardworking Harrison. The school offered him a full ride, tuition and books included. For Harrison, the unexpected opportunity to attend college free of charge couldn't have come at a better time as he was unsure about his future plans. "I really didn't expect that to happen," Harrison said. "To know that I have a path to go somewhere, that's something new." "Now he can go to college and figure out what do in his life, and we're going to help guide him," Hampton said. Harrison's future has never been brighter, all thanks to one simple, generous gesture by a few good people at the Center Point Waffle House. "You never know who you can touch or who you can influence with one simple gesture," Blevins said. One simple gesture that changed a life and potentially many more forever.
